- Different flies are applicable in different water conditions and at different parts of the season.- Chartreuse is a great color for super fresh fish out of the salt.- Pink is a good option in dirty water.- As the fish head upriver, black and blue is a top choice.- Later in the season in sunny, clear, low water conditions, smaller flies like various leech patterns come into play.

The tip is doubled over and a single nail knot is tied with the Maxima, with the long tag end of the nail knot passed through the eye of the loop– this tag becomes the butt section of the leader. This rigging is illustrated, by the way, in A Passion for Steelhead. 2-3 feet of 15 pound Maxima Ultragreen tippet, attached via loop to loop connection to the butt section with perfection loops tied in both the butt section and the tippet Simple fly tied on a Targus 2/0 7999 hook– craft fur tail with spun marabou on the front, in chartreuse and kingfisher blue, tied on with a double turle knot “I rig this exactly like I would fishing for steelhead. That’s my mindset– I’m just fishing for big steelhead.”5The Summary Sage 9140-4 TCX Rio Skagit 650 body, 5 foot cheater Tibor RiptideThe Detail Initial section of 50 yards of 30 pound dacron, tied to the spool with anarbor knot and two granny knots. “We trust we won’t be here. I’ve never gotten to the arbor. As long as you don’t run out of bar, arbor should never occur. It never hurts to scout your surroundings before the first cast into the bucket is made.” 100 yards of 50 pound PowerPro, double-uni knotted to the rear section of backing. 50 more yards of 30 pound dacron, double-uni knotted to the PowerPro. “This backing rig allows for more backing capacity pursuant to the size of reel that you’re fishing. The first section on the reel gives padding against the arbor – PowerPro can slip if it’s not really packed in tight. Both sections of 30 serve as a warning track – you know where you are in your backing at all times. There are people who begin to cringe at this many knots in the backing system, but the double-uni, tied properly, is a super strong knot.” Skagit body nail-knotted to the front section of 30 pound dacron. “I’m still tying nail knots. I realize that this isn’t typical for a big-game rig. I’m one of these people who won’t put a bunch of heat onto a fish that’s into the backing. I’ll always have fly line on the reel before I put a bunch of heat into the fight.” 5 foot cheater looped to the Skagit body 13′ of T-14, looped to the cheater with the braided mono loop provided in the T-14 pack Butt section of 20″ of 30 pound Maxima Ultragreen, tied to the T-14 with a nail knot Tip section of 20″ of 20 pound Maxima Ultragreen, tied to the butt section with a blood knot Jumbo Critter in chartreuse and blue, tied on with a uni knot‘Small Ball’ Sage 8129-4 Z-Axis Rio Skagit 600 body, no cheater Sage 6010 reel “If there gets to be a bunch of wind, I’m taking the shorter rod. It’s much less affected by the wind. I’ll also fish the 8129 because it packs a ton of power in a short amount of stick but leaves less daily strain on the caster.”Go-To Rig Sage 9140-4 TCX Rio Skagit 700 body, 5 foot cheater Tibor Riptide “This rig represents the return of a traditional great king rod. This is the heir to the throne of the vaunted 9141-4. It’s the new .30-06 of spey rods – powerful and versatile.”‘Long Ball’ Sage 10150-4 or 10160-4 Z-Axis “depending on how much Advil is in my boat bag” Rio Skagit 750, 5 foot cheater Tibor Spey “This is the rod you reach for when you need to cover a lot of ground.” “Even the 15 and 16’ rods are still best suited with a 5’ cheater, although the 7.5’ cheater can have its place. It’s my option than the usability of the 7.5′ is greater when the sinktip length is in the 7-11′ range vs the 11 – 15’ range.” “On this rig I’ll go with a shooting line setup like the GuideLine or the ‘secret society’ type setup that uses a straight mono running line like Berkeley Trilene Big Game mono. This rig is all about covering ground, so the running line applies here.”AFS Setup Sage 8129-4 Z-Axis Rio AFS 8/9 hover head Sage 6010 reel “This very well may become the rig of choice, just because this is one of the more wicked casting setups of all time. The one caveat to this AFS type of rig is that fly size and weight has to be scrutinized with a tighter eye than the throw-it-all Skagit format. But there’s some neat lighter-dressed flies like the Hobo Spey, the Scott Howell signature intruders, and overall lighter-dressed flies that will work just fine.”We’ve looked at George Cook’s go-to king rig for fishing at Alaska West on the Kanektok, and we’ve seen what George’s quiver looks like when he’s chasing Kanektok kings. We’ll end our George Cook series with some of his thoughts on a variety of topics related to swinging flies for kings. On Leader Length“I like to fish a leader with a total length of 40 to 54″ in general. The only reason to fish a leader as short as 36″ is if you’re fishing an unweighted fly. With weighted flies I like a longer leader. The weighted fly is going to sink rather quickly by itself – particularly the thinner tied or waterlogged style intruder. The longer mono doesn’t hinder the sink rate of the weighted fly as much, and it might provide some degree of stealth.”On Backing Capacity“Backing capacity is a much-overthought subject. History has always said you should have 200 yards on an anadromous rig. I’ve never seen a king salmon take more than 125 yards if it wasn’t snagged. I consider 125 yards to be the minimum, but I’m fine fishing 125. 150 to 175 yards is ideal.”On Leader Knots“I am still really old school when it comes to tying knots. I still tie blood knots any time that the diameter change will let me. I just prefer the cleanliness of them.”On Tip Length“When I’m making T-14 tips for kings, I make a 9′, an 11′, a 13′ and a 15′. It’s not a bad policy to have a couple 13’s and a couple 15’s. 13′ is the magic number, not just for the king gig but for worldwide anadromous anything. It’s where sink rate and castability meet on the curve.”On Fly Color“Chartreuse/Blue and Chartreuse are the colors for fish that are less than 4 miles from the salt.”“I also like Pink/Orange in a Jumbo Critter type fly, but once the chums are in the river, fish pink at your own peril [our chums love eating pink].”“Once you’re more than 4 miles from salt, other colors start to have more success like Black/Blue and Black/Red.”“Black/Fuschia/Kingfisher Blue is a big choice outside of tidal influence. This is a color pattern that was given to me independently by Mike McCune and Bob Clay.”6The Summary 12 1/2′ 8/9 Loomis Stinger 550 grain Rio Skagit head Ross Canyon Big GameThe Detail175-200 yards of 50 pound Powerpro for backing that is attached to the reel spool by wrapping 7 times around the spool arbor, then tying a 6 wrap Uni-knot, then pulling it all SUPER tight. “Use gloves to do this.”100 feet of 30 pound mono running line, attached to the backing and the Skagit head using loop-to-loop connections via triple surgeon’s loops550 grain Rio Skagit headOne of three sinktips attached to the Skagit head using loop-to-loop connections. More on Ed’s tips in the Commentary section below.Straight shot of 15 pound fluorocarbon leader attached to the sinktip using a loop-to-loop connection and a non-slip mono loop in the sinktip end of the leader. “My belief is that 15 pound is plenty strong enough for King fishing, but is not so strong as to imperil one’s fly line if the rig happens to snag up on a midriver root wad!”Lead-eyed string leech in fluorescent yellow, hot pink or purple, tied on with a non-slip mono loopThe CommentaryThe Light Rig“This rig is definitely on the ‘light’ side of King flyfishing rigs, aimed more at having the most fun with fish in the 8 to 18 pound range. It will handle larger Kings – up to around the high 20’s – but if I were targeting fish larger than that I would step up to a 9/10 weight rig. I have found this combination to be one of the most versatile for the earlier part of the Kanektok King run when 8 to 18 pound Kings comprise the major portion of the catch and also when high water conditions usually prevail. The 12 1/2′ length of this rod is just short enough to make for comfortable casting and fishing from out of an anchored-up boat, a circumstance of fishing that is sometimes required during early season high water. In my experience, boat fishing with rods longer than this is cumbersome at best and can be downright fatal for a longer rod if a hooked King decides to make a run under the boat! When it comes to ‘bar fishing’, the 12 1/2′ length is capable of throwing out to 75, 80, 85 feet, which when combined with wading, works quite well for the majority of the bars. This is especially true during early season high water where the higher velocity and turbidity of the current coaxes the fish into running closer to the beach. One other plus of the 12 1/2 footer is that during circumstances of wind the shorter length allows for ‘sliding the cast low’ – closer to the surface of the river – thus reducing the effects that the wind has on the flyline. The one caveat about this King combo is that I would not recommend it for beginning speycasters – casting skills need to be of a fairly high degree to really realize the benefits of such a ‘compact’ rig.”Sinktips“The shortest tip, a 6 footer, is constructed of 6′ of T-14 spliced onto 3′ of 12 weight floater for a total length of 9′. The middle tip is a straight 9′ chunk of T-14. The longest tip, the 12 footer, is also just a straight 12′ chunk of T-14.I use braided mono loops on both ends of the tips – 50 pound on the line-to-line end, and 30 pound on the leader end. The leader loop is colored black with a Sharpie so it doesn’t look like a white worm swimming in front of the fly.”One Last Suggestion“Regardless of what rod/line combo is selected for pursuing Kanektok Kings, a hook file should be an essential part of one’s tackle inventory. ‘Sticky sharp’ hooks are KEY to successful King fishing. I recommend a 6″ slim taper file that can be purchased at most any hardware store for 2 or 3 bucks. Stick the pointy end into a used wine cork to prevent accidental stabbing, then put it in your vest or tackle bag and make it a ‘don’t leave home without it’ item!”7The Summary Burkheimer 10130-3 – That’s right, 13 feet for a 10 weight. Ross Momentum LT 7 Airflo Skagit Compact, 720 grainsThe Detail 30 pound dacron backing attached to the spool with an arbor knot Airflo Ridge Tactical Running line, attached to the backing using anAlbright knot, coated with Zap-A-Gap Skagit Compact 720 attached to the factory loop on the front of the running line using a loop-to-loop connection Airflo Custom Cut 330 tip cut to 12 feet, attached to the Skagit Compact using the factory loops and a loop-to-loop connection Loop created in the leader end of the tip by stripping the coating off the end of the tip and tying a perfection loop into the core 4 feet of 15 pound Maxima Ultragreen, attached to the perfection loop on the front of the sinktip using a triple surgeon’s knot and a loop-to-loop connection Solitude Reverse Marabou Intruder tube fly (available this winter) slid onto the leader Owner SSW hook, size 1, tied to the leader using a non-slip mono loopThe Commentary “When I pull the fly out of tension, I want it to drop quickly. Using that stripped off end of the sinktip and a straight leader, versus using a butt section, enables the fly to sink. The idea is that by having a straight leader, as soon as you take the fly out of tension, the fly will sink a lot quicker than the sinktip will. With a Skagit head, you don’t need to have a tapered leader. You’re much better off getting the fly down quickly. Halfway through the week at Alaska West this year, that really hit me. By fishing tips that were shorter but heavier, I started hooking a lot more adults by getting the fly into the troughs.”8The Summary Ross Reach 8134-4 Ross Momentum LT 6 Airflo Skagit Compact, 570 grainsThe Detail 275yards of 30lb Dacron backing, attached to the spool with an arbor knot Rio Powerflex Core Floating Shooting Line .035″ “I loop the back end of the running line, and secure it with two nail knots of 12lb Maxima Chameleon or Ultragreen. I then loop this to a non-slip loop knot in the backing.” Skagit Compact Head, looped to the running line using factory loops Airflo T-13 tip, cut to 8 to 14 foot lengths, attached to the Skagit head using the factory loops 4″ Butt section of 30 pound Maxima Ultragreen attached to the leader end of the tip using an Albright knot 2 to 3 feet of 15 pound Maxima Ultragreen, looped to the butt section with a non-slip mono loop Pink Fish Taco tied on using non-slip loop knotThe Commentary“During the early season on the Kanektok, higher water conditions with a fair amount of color is the norm. This means that the kings are more comfortable and will typically travel and hold closer to the edges in fairly shallow water. It’s often not necessary to wade deep, cast far and dredge the bottom. The lighter setup with the 13’4” 8 weight rod is plenty to put 30+ pound fish on the beach, and it’s much more enjoyable to cast and fish all day than a 9The Summary Burkheimer 9135 Airflo Skagit Compact, 660 grain Tibor GulfstreamThe Detail 30 pound dacron backing, attached to the spool with an arbor knot Guideline LRL .032″ running line attached to the backing with a doublenail knot, coated with UV glue. “LRL is my favorite running line – it doesn’t kink and I can fish it in both cold and hot conditions.” Skagit Compact head looped to the running line using the factory loop on the back of the head and a hand-welded loop in the front end of the running line 10 feet of T-14 looped to the head using the factory loop on the head, and a loop on the back end of the T-14 created by folding over the T-14, tying a nail knot with 10 pound Maxima, and sealing the knot with UV glue 20 pound Maxima butt section attached to the front end of the T-14 wth a nail knot, sealed with UV glue. “I don’t like Albright knots in this application – I find that they slip.” 3 – 4 feet of 15 pound Maxima attached to the butt section using a loop to loop connection and double surgeon’s loops on both pieces Marabou tube flies, stacked as necessary (more on this below) Owner SSW #2 hook, tied on with a non-slip mono loop looped through the eyeThe Commentary “I use 15 pound Maxima for my tippet because I don’t want to risk losing my head with 20 pound.” “The idea with the marabou tube flies is that we can create a large profile fly that’s still easy to cast. We stack multiple flies to create different sizes and color combinations, depending on river conditions. The bunny fur piece is used mostly when the river is high and dark. A yarn ball tied in with the marabou really flares the fly and gives that big profile.” “I add bullet weights above the tubes for extra depth. If I’m in a run where I want to really slow the fly down, as opposed to sinking it, I’ll go with a longer tip, like 15′ of T-14, instead of adding that bullet weight.”Т-14 конец1. Cut T-14 to the desired length (more on this below).2. Slip a braided mono loop over the butt end of the T-14.3. Tie a single nail knot over the end of the loop to hold it in place.4. Bonus tip: Whip a colored section of fly tying thread just past the nail knot on the side closest to the loop. Come up with a scheme that maps the color of the thread to the length of the tip.5. Seal the nail knot and the colored thread with UV Knot Sense for durability.6. Slip a braided mono loop over the leader end of the T-14.7. Tie a single nail knot over the end of the loop to hold it in place.8. Bonus tip: Color the entire braided loop on the leader end of the tip with a black Sharpie, so you don’t have a big white worm-looking thing swimming near your fly.9. Seal the nail knot on the leader end of the tip with T-14 with UV Knot Sense. This construction method results in strong, extremely durable tips – the UV Knot Sense makes the connections really hold up. We’ve got 3 seasons of heavy use on our tips with no signs of wear. Most of the tips that we fish on the Kanektok and the Dean are between 10 and 18 feet long. A basic set of tips to cover most conditions would include 10-, 13-, 15- and 18-foot tips. If you wanted to be really prepared, you could make 7-, 10-, 13-, 15-, 18- and 21-foot tips (with the 21-foot tip probably only applicable for chinooks on the Dean). If you wanted to be super-prepared and/or you want to rig multiple rods, you could make 2 tips in each of the lengths listed above.
